It's Weird, but It Works!
July 10, 2020
There have been several times over the past few years that I’ve been asked, “What do you do for (insert issue here).” My friends and family that know me well know that I seek natural solutions to health issues as my primary response. There are always times that medical intervention is necessary, but I usually save that for extreme cases and emergencies. If it is a problem I can solve with a “home remedy” I try to do that. I had one friend tell another to ask me because “what she says is weird, but it works!”
That being said, I am not a doctor or medically trained professional. The ideas that I have to share are just things that I have gathered from others or heard somewhere so I tried it out. If it worked for me multiple times in the past, then it’s something I’ll try again and share with others. These are the remedies I use for my family that are often considered “old wives tales”, but I refuse to participate in anything that involves necromancy, witchcraft, or any other type of occult type practices, and I would implore you to avoid those as well, as advised in the Scriptures (Acts 19, Galatians 5, Ephesians 5, 1 Timothy 4, 1 Thessalonians Revelation 21).
Garlic and onions are in just about everything I cook, but they are helpful for more than just food! Have an earache? Cook about 12 cloves of coarsely chopped garlic in 2 Tbs of pure extra virgin olive oil (preferably cold pressed). Once the garlic is soft, remove from heat and allow it to cool. Put drops of the garlic-infused olive oil in the infected ear. Store the remainder of the oil in a glass bottle with a tight-fitting lid (with the cooked garlic). This usually gets rid of the pain after one or two treatments. Afraid of passing that cough around to others in your house? Try cutting up some onion and placing it next to your bed and around the house. Onions absorb the molecules around them (this is why your refrigerator smells like onion when you put a cut onion inside). The chopped onion will help absorb those germs you are coughing and sneezing, making it less likely to be transferred through the air. Of course, if you sneeze right on someone, no amount of onion will help.
Sore throats always cause me concern. I am prone to strep throat, and I am allergic to most of the medicines usually prescribed for strep. I have found that colloidal silver usually takes care of the problem. I take a tablespoon every morning and every evening for at least two weeks. If symptoms get worse or I don’t seem to improve within a week, I seek medical help. I have found that colloidal silver seems to work for pretty much any type of infection I have had (including ear, sinus, and throat). I have also used it topically on cuts or abrasions. I just put a drop or two on the wound after it has been properly cleaned.
I have also used essential oils to help me stay healthy. Oregano oil has been helpful in alleviating sinus issues. I boil a pot of water on the stove. Once it has reached boiling, I remove it from heat and add a couple drops of oregano oil. I then tent a towel over my head and inhale the vapor. WARNING: Always keep your eyes closed when doing this or they will sting like crazy! Lavender oil is a great skin soother after sunburn, and tea tree oil is a great relief for skin ailments as well. I know several people who have found itch relief from poison ivy from tea tree and/or eucalyptus oil. I also use tea tree and rose oils on my skin after a shower to help keep my complexion balanced.
When they didn’t have the medicine and technology we have today, they relied on plants to help. There are so many remedies to be found from the wisdom of days gone past. I don’t want to overwhelm readers with a long list, so I’ll stop with what I have already said; however, I look forward to sharing some more in the future! In the meantime, don’t be so quick to laugh at grandma’s suggestions! Those old wives tales exist for a reason...they usually work!
